Australian Open Top Pick: Ben Shelton vs. Lorenzo Sonego

There were few forecasts for a quarterfinal between Lorenzo Sonego and Ben Shelton at the 2025 Australian Open. But that is precisely what we are getting. So, how will this play out?

Shelton has already reached the semifinals of the 2023 US Open. So this isn't new territory for the talented young American, and I'm incredibly optimistic about his chances of making another last four. Shelton should be able to defeat Sonego, the 55th-ranked veteran, and I expect him to do so in less than five sets. 

Sonego has had a terrific campaign thus far, but his draw has not been particularly difficult. Sure, Stan Wawrinka is one of the best players of all time, but he is no longer the same player he was. And, while Joao Fonseca has the potential to become a Grand Slam champion, he is far from finished. His other two opponents, Fabian Marozsan and Learner Tien, are solid but not exceptional. Overall, Sonego has faced a few opponents he can defeat solely by his superior firepower and talent. That won't happen here.
