Environment Canada Warns of 'Very Intense' Snowfall North of the GTA
Environment Canada has issued a warning of a "multi-day lake effect snow squall event" for areas north of Toronto beginning Thursday night.
Snow squall warnings have been issued for much of cottage country, where accumulations might exceed 30 cm by Friday night.
Several municipalities, including Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Haliburton, Owen Sound, and Tobermory, have issued warnings.
"According to the most recent analysis, a fairly severe band of lake effect snow will hit areas of the area throughout the day Friday. This band may stretch well inland, towards Haliburton, and create heavy snowfall rates. The band is forecast to travel south of the region Friday night before returning north on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
"As is typical of lake effect snow, snowfall amounts will be highly varied. Some places may receive more than 50 cm by Sunday.
A snow squall watch is in force for Orangeville, Grand Valley, and Southern Dufferin counties.
Some flurries are anticipated in Toronto in the coming days, but the city is not forecast to receive considerable snowfall.
Toronto may experience some snowflakes late this evening and overnight, with light snow anticipated on Friday and over the weekend.
The temperature in Toronto is predicted to reach a high of 5 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with somewhat milder weather forecast for the weekend.
