Rogers to launch satellite-to-mobile text messaging trial
The next development in Rogers Communications Inc.'s collaboration with SpaceX and Lynk Global to eventually provide complete satellite-to-phone coverage across apps, data, and voice service is the launch of a new satellite-to-mobile text messaging service.

According to the firm, all Canadians can sign up for a free beta trial of its Rogers Satellite SMS service, which also has text-to-911 functionality, until October.

The solution automatically connects handsets in places without cell service by utilizing Rogers' nationwide wireless spectrum and SpaceX's Starlink low-Earth orbit satellites.

Its purpose is to keep customers connected along rural roadways and in some of Canada's most isolated areas.

According to Tony Staffieri, president and CEO of Rogers, the announcement "represents the next big leap in wireless connectivity."

After the trial period, Rogers Satellite will be available to all Canadians for $15 per month and will be free for users on the Rogers Ultimate plan.

For a year, customers who take part in the beta trial will receive a $5 monthly discount.
