Diogo Jota Crash: Officials Disclose Likely Cause of Fatal Accident Involving Liverpool Star

Spanish officials have disclosed a possible explanation for the incident that killed Liverpool football player Diogo Jota, as details of the road's deadly past surface.

Portuguese international Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother André Silva were killed when their Lamborghini drove off a Spanish road and caught fire, according to authorities.

The couple was driving on the A52 highway when they wrecked after midnight on Thursday (local time), and they were attempting to reach Santander to catch a ferry back to the UK.

Jota died just weeks after marrying his longtime love, Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children.

"Yes to forever," he posted on social media after he announced their wedding.

According to the UK's Press Association, a Spanish government source stated that authorities were considering the crash as "a possible speeding incident".

A spokeswoman for the Spanish Civil Guard informed the BBC that the Lamborghini abandoned the road due to a tyre burst while overtaking.

They stated that it was "impossible to say exactly what speed the car was going" but confirmed that no other vehicle was involved.

Wreckage at the scene reveals that Jota and his brother were driving a Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder, a favorite of players and celebrities, with a top speed of 320kph and a 0-100kph time of less than three seconds.

Local officials stated that the area where Jota crashed was a recognized blackspot.

According to The Sun, Angel Blanco, a central government delegate for the province of Zamora, described the A52 as "very dangerous" due to its maximum authorized speed of 120kph.

Irate drivers have reportedly slammed the state of the road where the accident occurred, calling it a "goat track" full of potholes.

"I'm not sure if they had a puncture or if an animal got in the path.... What I do know is that the A52 is in a terrible condition."

A different person commented: "You're right, when I come from France and I go to Vigo, I go through there and I'm always afraid of that road with all the potholes it has, it can break the suspension."

According to local news outlet El Dia de Zamora, the A52 had more crashes than any other surrounding route, with the majority occurring during good driving conditions.

Liverpool declared that the club was "devastated by the tragic passing."

Liverpool FC will make no further comment at this time and ask that the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates, and club personnel be respected as they try to cope with an incomprehensible tragedy. We will continue to offer them our full support.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and has won three major championships with the Merseyside club.

Portugal mourns the loss of brothers.

The Portuguese football federation issued a statement regretting the fatalities. According to Federation President Pedro Proença, Portuguese football was "completely devastated."

"More than a superb footballer with nearly 50 national team appearances, Diogo Jota was a remarkable individual who was revered by all of his colleagues and opponents. He had a contagious pleasure and was well-known in his neighborhood," Proença added in the statement.

The Portuguese federation has requested a minute of silence before Thursday's match between Portugal and Spain at the Women's European Championship in Switzerland.

"We lost two champions," Proença explained. "Their deaths represent an irreparable loss for Portuguese football, and we will all do our best to honour their legacy daily."

Portugal's Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, commented on the "unexpected and tragic" deaths. He described Jota as "an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal's name."

"I extend my deepest condolences to their family," the politician stated. "It is a sad day for football and national and international sports."

Sports world reacts.

Reactions began to come in from all over the world, including from non-football athletes such as NBA star LeBron James (a minority owner at Liverpool) and tennis superstar Rafael Nadal.

"It doesn't make any sense," Jota's Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo stated. "We were just together on the national team, and you just got married. My sympathies to your family, including your wife and children. I wish them all the strength in the world. I know you'll always be with them. Diogo and André, rest in peace. "We'll all miss you."

Porto and former teammates mourned the losses and expressed their condolences, as did other teams, federations, and leagues.

The Premier League stated that it was "shocked and devastated."

"Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo's family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time," according to the statement.

"Football has lost a champion who will be greatly missed. We will continue to support our clubmates."

UEFA expressed its condolences to the relatives, friends, and teammates who have been touched "by this heartbreaking loss."

It stated that a moment of silence will be observed during Euro 2025 matches on Thursday and Friday.
