Match Report: Chelsea Triumphs 3-1 Over Wolves
Chelsea moved to fourth in the Premier League table after defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1.
Chelsea got off to a good start and gained a well-deserved lead midway through the first half, thanks to Tosin Adarabioyo's clinical finish.
Matt Doherty equalised from a corner in first-half injury time, but the Blues reclaimed control with two goals around the hour mark.
Marc Cucurella scored from close range to put us back in front, and Noni Madueke added the finishing touch after Trevoh Chalobah appeared destined to score on his Chelsea homecoming five minutes later.
Dynamic Duo Makes Their Return
Tonight marked Chalobah's first Chelsea game of the season after returning from a loan spell at Crystal Palace. The Academy graduate lined up with Tosin in the centre of defence, with Levi Colwill out due to injury.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall made his Premier League debut for the season since Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia were injured.
Five changes were made from the team that drew 2-2 with Bournemouth a week ago, with Reece James, Tosin, and Pedro Neto promoted to the starting lineup and Josh Acheampong and Jadon Sancho dropping to the bench.
Chelsea started the game positively, winning a corner inside 20 seconds of the kickoff. Chalobah had an instant impact, flicking on the resultant set-piece, and Nicolas Jackson volleyed wide.
The Blues applied constant pressure early on, and Madueke's superb touch and strength allowed him to surge into the box before having his shot deflected wide.
There was wave after wave of pressure. After just over a quarter of an hour, Jackson's challenge on Jose Sa nearly resulted in a Dewsbury-Hall goal, Cole Palmer went wide, and the England star had an effort saved by the goalie.
Jackson's work rate continues to trouble Premier League defenders, and it was his pressing and tackling that allowed the Senegalese to regain the ball within his own half and drive into the box. The striker was tackled, but it resulted in Palmer and James having their attempts blocked.
Chalobah's long deliveries forward and wide were also causing issues for the opposition, and it was from his accurate ball that Doherty headed beyond his oncoming goalkeeper and nearly into the path of Palmer before the away side recovered just in time.
Major Breakthrough Achieved
Our domination ultimately paid off midway through the half, as the resultant corner fell at James' feet. His shot was diverted into Tosin's path, and the centre back handled the ball wonderfully just outside the six-yard box before finishing into the bottom corner. The 27-year-old was first flagged for offside, but a VAR review proved he was in line with the defence.
Wolves responded strongly, as Matheus Cunha had a shot from the outskirts of the area, which was denied by Tosin and Cucurella shortly after.
And in first-half injury time, the visitors equalised when a Wolves corner to the near post was not gathered, allowing Doherty to stab in the equaliser.
The Blues pressed for their second goal early in the second half, with Madueke's attempt saved and then blocked, and eventually arrived on the hour.
Back in the Lead
Dewsbury-Hall flicked on Madueke's inswinging cross from the right, and Cucurella controlled the ball superbly with his chest before scoring from close range in the bottom corner.
The lead was then extended five minutes later. Jackson's great hold-up play and technique at the corner flag earned him a free-kick, and when Palmer hung the delivery to the far post, Chalobah rose highest to head towards the far corner, and Madueke sealed the deal by nodding home on the line.
After being played through by Palmer, Jackson nearly scored a fourth Chelsea goal, but the offside flag was raised as soon as the striker struck the bottom corner.
With ten minutes remaining, Cunha blasted a warning shot, but Sanchez palmed it away for a corner. The Blues' luck continued when Tyrique George made his Premier League debut with six minutes left.
Jorgen Strand Lauren had a shot saved, and Nicolas Jackson went wide as we reached the final ten minutes, but there would be no more goals. We held on to the three points with reasonable ease.
