Wiredu Targeted by 'Unacceptable' Abuse, Plymouth Responds

Plymouth Argyle have denounced the "onslaught" of social media harassment directed at midfielder Brendan Wiredu following their 3-1 loss to Barnsley.
The 25-year-old made his debut for the Pilgrims in their opening League One match of the season.
He scored an own goal, committed an error that led to Barnsley's second goal, and received a yellow card for an altercation on the field before being substituted at halftime.
In a statement, Argyle mentioned that Wiredu faced "a wave of abuse from Argyle supporters both publicly and privately, which prompted him to deactivate his social media accounts".
The statement went on to say, "This conduct is intolerable for any player, staff member, or supporter, and it does not reflect the One Argyle principles that we uphold every day throughout the football club."
"Brendan openly expressed his enthusiasm before his debut about performing in front of the Green Army for the first time, and we hope that Argyle fans continue to provide him with the exceptional support he deserves as a vital part of our team.
"Everyone at the club is fully backing Brendan during this period, and we want to emphasize to supporters that the standards we maintain online are just as crucial within Home Park."
