Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Audio Unable to Cast Due to 'Untrusted' Outage
Over the last few hours, the Chromecast (2nd generation) and Chromecast Audio owners have been unable to Cast any audio or video content.

All users of the two Chromecast devices receive the message "Untrusted device: [name] could not be verified."  This could be due to an outdated device firmware" warning.  This warning occurs in apps (such as YouTube) once users choose the relevant devices as Cast targets.

You can only "close" the dialog box and not proceed.  This issue cannot be resolved using end-user workarounds, reboots, resets, or other means.  The screensaver (Google Photos, art, photography, etc.) with time and weather still works.

Newer devices like the Chromecast (3rd generation) and Ultra appear unaffected today.

Today's "Untrusted device" notice has led some to believe that Google has bricked their Chromecasts or is announcing the end of life.

However, this is more likely a problem because Google has not announced any support deprecation notices for such devices, as it did with the original Chromecast (1st generation) in May 2023.  (Even the original streaming gadget still works today.)

The company can quickly provide a server-side remedy.

The Chromecast (2nd generation) and Chromecast Audio are two of Google's oldest products. Both were released at the same event in September 2015. Like all other Chromecast devices, they run the 1.56.x firmware.
