AMESBURY, Mass. – The former tight end Russ Francis, who passed away on Sunday, October 1, at the age of 70, is much missed by the New England Patriots.
Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft said, "On behalf of the entire New England Patriots organisation, we extend our sincere sympathies to the family of Russ Francis, who tragically passed away yesterday." "During his playing career, Russ was a beloved player by some fans. In addition to being a tremendous player on the pitch, he had a huge personality off it. He enjoyed life to the fullest, pushed the envelope, and knew no bounds. We are praying for Russ's friends, teammates, family, and the many Patriots supporters who are grieving his death."
After being selected in the first round in the 1975 NFL Draught out of Oregon, Francis spent his first 13 NFL seasons with the New England Patriots (1975–1980, 1987–88) and the San Francisco 49ers (1982– 1987). The Patriots named him to their all-decade team in the 1970s, and he was a part of their 35th anniversary squad. He was also a three-time Pro Bowl player (1977, 1978, and 1979). He was also an All-Pro twice (1976, 1978).
At the end of his career, he had 40 touchdowns and 5,262 yards on 393 catches. His 5,262 receiving yards, 393 catches, and 40 touchdown receptions matched for 11th place among tight ends when he retired following the 1988 season. His career receiving totals with the Patriots at the time of his retirement were sixth in terms of catches (207), fifth in terms of receiving yards (3,157), and fourth in terms of touchdown receptions (28). In the history of the team, his 28 touchdown catches still rank 11th.
The 1982 trade of Francis by New England to San Francisco resulted in the selection of Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett with a draught choice. He played a significant role in the 49ers' 1984 Super Bowl triumph over Miami. Following the 1988 season, Francis announced his retirement from the Patriots, having returned to New England in 1987.
