Malik Beasley of Pistons Under Federal Investigation for Gambling

According to sources, federal officials are investigating Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley on gambling charges involving NBA games and prop bets.
According to insiders, the charges stem from the 2023-24 season, when Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks. Beasley averaged 11.3 points in 79 games that season, including a career-high 77 starts.
A gambling industry insider told ESPN's David Purdum that at least one significant US sportsbook noticed unusually high betting interest on Beasley's numbers starting in January 2024.
A gambling industry insider mentioned a matchup between the Bucks and the Portland Trail Blazers on January 31, 2024. The odds on Beasley recording fewer than 2.5 rebounds dropped considerably at bookmakers before the game, from approximately +120 to roughly -250 due to a rush in action on the under. Beasley finished with six rebounds, and the bets that were considered uncommon lost.
"An investigation is not a charge," Beasley's lawyer, Steve Haney, told ESPN. "Malik has the same right to the presumption of innocence as everyone else under the United States Constitution. He is not currently facing any charges."
Haney told ABC News in a brief phone chat Sunday afternoon that he has spoken with prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of New York, who he believes are leading the investigation.
Beasley, 28, and the Pistons were in talks about a three-year, $42 million contract to bring the free-agent sharpshooter back to Detroit, but those conversations are currently on hold, according to sources.
The Pistons told on Sunday that they are aware of the inquiry into Beasley but are deferring additional comment to the NBA.
"We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors' investigation," NBA spokesperson Mike Bass told ESPN.
The nine-year veteran averaged 16.3 points in 82 games last season, his first with the Pistons. He made 319 three-pointers this season, the most in Pistons team history.
Last year, the NBA banned former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter after an investigation revealed that he supplied sensitive information to sports bettors and wagered on games.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Miami Heat player Terry Rozier was under federal investigation for suspicious betting patterns surrounding him during a March 2023 game while playing for the Charlotte Hornets. Rozier has not been charged with any crime, nor has the NBA sanctioned him.
In 2020, while playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Beasley pled guilty to a felony charge of threats of violence and was sentenced to 120 days in jail, which he spent following the 2020-21 season. In addition, the NBA punished him for 12 games in 2021 as a result of his guilty plea.
Beasley has been a journeyman since his first six seasons with the Denver Nuggets and Timberwolves, and the Pistons are his fifth team in four years.
