Inter Milan Deliver Powerful Statement with 5-0 Victory Over Torino in Serie A Season Opener

Inter Milan's first game back as coach, a 5-0 thrashing of poor Torino on Monday, was the start of their bid to win the Serie A title again. Alessandro Bastoni scored the first goal in the 18th minute with a beautiful sliding header. Marcus Thuram scored in both halves, and Lautaro Martinez, Ange-Yoan Bonny, and another new player made sure that the home team would easily win. Napoli's main rivals for the Scudetto are likely to be Inter. They lost the title on the last day of last season, which ended with a painful loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
The 20-time Italian winners didn't look like the worn-out, old team that PSG tore apart, even though Petar Sucic was the only new player in the starting lineup.
In the 36th minute, Sucic made a beautiful pass behind Torino's poor defence that set up Thuram's first goal of the new season.
Six minutes after halftime, Martinez scored the third goal by sliding home a terrible pass from Gvidas Gineitis. Ten minutes later, Thuram made the scoreline match the play by heading home Bastoni's great deep cross.
In the 72nd minute, Bonny scored after more terrible passes in front of their own penalty area let the France under-21 forward score the fifth.
An impressive performance like that would normally be played in front of a loud crowd, but there were long stretches of near silence among the home fans because of a protest from the loudest "ultra" fans.
A lot of "ultras" stayed outside the stadium to protest the fact that fans were put on a "black list" and couldn't renew their season tickets in the "Curva Nord" area of the San Siro.
Inter's choice comes after a group of top fans from both AC Milan and AC Milan were given up to 10 years in prison in June for a variety of serious crimes.
The top members of the Curva Nord, who were arrested in September of last year and are now in jail, were found guilty of criminal conspiracy aggravated by mafia methods. Their boss, Andrea Beretta, was also found guilty of killing a 'Ndrangheta mobster.
Five people, including Beretta, are also charged with planning the murder of Vittorio Boiocchi in October 2022. Boiocchi was a professional criminal and was seen as one of the most important leaders of Inter's fans in the past.
Boiocchi's death was connected to a fight over who would run the allegedly profitable activities of Inter fans during games, such as selling tickets, managing parking, and selling food and drinks from snack stands.
Because the home fans weren't as loud, the away fans from Torino could be clearly heard yelling "ole" at their team's few good passes and insulting the club's owner, Urbano Cairo.
Based on how they played on Monday, Marco Baroni's team will have a tough season fighting to stay in the league.
